Having seen two rather scruffy magpies tearing up the lawn in front of our first floor flat we started throwing out a spoonful of our morning porridge after breakfast every day.

Since then they have been waiting for it, often scolding us if we were late.

When they became better looking and with shinier plumage, we saw one of them taking up a mouthful and hurrying across the lawn.

He put it in a hole, picked up a leaf and laid it over the top! We had thought he was taking it for his young.

More recently we threw out some stale bread. One of them came down, picked it up in his beak – and threw it aside, apparently in disgust! Luckily the pigeons and robins were pleased to take it up.
