I AM writing to you to express my disgust at the mindless stupidity of someone who took it upon themselves to dispose of hazardous asbestos sheeting in Sandy Way, Redhill.
I made the discovery while walking to my local shop for a newspaper.
Sandy Way is an unadopted road which leads to the river Stour; it is used daily by dog walkers and children playing.
There used to be a sign adjacent to the dumped asbestos saying “no dumping”, but this is now overgrown.
I find the dumping of hazardous materials such as asbestos infuriating, especially when Sandy Way, and Redhill, are such beautiful locations.
Being a construction manager myself I am well aware of the risks that are inherent in exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is perfectly safe in its solid state, but potentially very dangerous if disturbed, and my fear was that young children would find it great fun to smash the sheets, putting them at risk.
A few days later the material was removed.
I would really like to see the person who dumped it caught and prosecuted, but as we all know this will never happen and cases such as this will continue.
