As a cyclist myself, I welcome the clamp down on cyclists who use the promenade (and other pedestrian areas) recklessly (Prom riders caught on camera in speed blitz, Daily Echo, June 25) – it is long overdue.

But the blitz will only work if the rules and regulations are enforced and the threatened fines imposed. Those who do ride dangerously are not usually the kind of people who will listen to safety lectures – the only thing that will stop them is a hefty financial penalty.

I use the promenade to cycle to and from work every day (except in the evening during the summer cycling restriction) and am regularly overtaken by other cyclists travelling at high speed weaving in and out of the crowd – and when I remonstrate with them over their stupidity I get a mouthful of abuse.

One area that needs special attention is the Pier Approach – cyclists come hurtling down the hill from the BIC and without even braking (they are supposed to dismount) zoom through the crowd in front of the pier to disappear along the eastern promenade.
