As one of the organisations that campaigned for cycling to be allowed on the seafront, and for the rules to be consistent along the full length, East Dorset Friends of the Earth would be extremely disappointed if the actions of a small number of irresponsible cyclists were to persuade the local councils to change the current rules.
Prohibiting cycling altogether will not stop those intent on breaking the rules, only effective policing will do this. The seafront is an excellent safe commuting route for cyclists and the facility must be retained.
Bournemouth and Poole councils are rightly committed to reducing congestion in the conurbation and encouraging us all to use our cars less.
The majority of cyclists, especially those who use their bikes for commuting, want safe on-road cycle lanes and improved junctions, eg advanced cycle lanes at traffic lights in preference to shared routes on pavements.
The benefits of cycling, both to our health and the health of the planet, make it essential that the current facilities for cyclists are improved and all of us are encouraged to use more sustainable forms of transport.
