I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that Bournemouth council has no plans to introduce congestion charges in the town (Daily Echo, June 18).

The reason congestion charging has been included in the transport study questionnaire is because government guidance recommends us to consult on these options as part of any future bid for funding to improve the road network. Charging people to drive into Bournemouth town centre has no political support from this Conservative administration.

The South Dorset Transport Study is an independent project currently seeking people’s views on a range of options for the future of Dorset’s transport system.

I would encourage as many residents as possible to have their say by completing the questionnaire online at sedorsetmms.com or by collecting a leaflet from your local library or council office.
