My congratulations to the “Echo addicts” of 60 years (Have Your Say, June 22).
As regards being a reader of the Daily Echo, I feel I can go back a little longer.
Back in 1940 it was delivered daily to my granny’s house where I stayed in the war.
Besides being read, being wartime it was put to other uses as well, such as lighting fires and toilet paper!
I also delivered it daily in 1943-44. When my parents moved to Ensbury Park they had it every day.
Later when I was married I too have had it every year since.
When the war ended we kept the front and back pages of May 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11, which I have just perused.
Find your archive copy for May 11, 1945. Look at the inside back page for memories of the cinemas. Also the report near the bottom of the page headed “Misuse of petrol at Poole.”
It brought a smile to my lips, especially the fines and costs.
The price of the Daily Echo then was three half-pence. Oh yes! I also always looked forward to the football pink issues on a Saturday.
Happy memories.
