I WAS shocked and deeply distressed by the report in the Echo of the savage killing of a swan while nesting on the River Stour.

That such an elegant, peaceful bird should be subjected to such a horrific death while sitting on its eggs is an appalling tragedy.

No blame should be attributed to the dog involved.

The blame rests firmly on the shoulders of the dog’s owners who had no control over their pet.

That they could walk away from this scene, apparently unconcerned, reveals just how irresponsible their attitude is to dog ownership, and what lack of respect or caring they have for wildlife.

The message is clear. If walking your dog where wildlife is likely to be, keep it on a lead.

But some will never learn.
