I READ today that the Olympic torch will be arriving in Bournemouth on Friday, July 13, 2012, as part of a nationwide tour prior to the Olympic games. How wonderful.
Yet again Bournemouth Council has another excuse to spend taxpayers’ money on what they see as dazzling and breathtaking celebrations, which in truth will probably turn out to be as much good as the over-sized sandbag off Boscombe beach.
Furthermore, to add to the nausea, some bright spark will suggest that yet another commemorative plaque be placed on the already overcrowded Pavilion wall to mark the occasion.
The council has also stated, that they want to involve Bournemouth communities in staging events and will be looking for inspiration from them on how to showcase the town’s amazing diversity and warmth. Actually, whilst I mention words such as dazzling, breathtaking, diversity and warmth, perhaps the torch could be put to another use.
Might I suggest, that while the chosen torch-carrying athlete runs proudly through the town, he nonchalantly tosses it into the IMAX building on passing. Now surely that would be an event worthy of taxpayers’ cash.
