REGARDING the recent media attention to the high cost of rail fares it seems to have been forgotten that the railway was invented to carry freight and that passenger traffic was a later addition that has always been subsidised by the profitable transportation of cargo.
As most of our European counterparts seem to be doing far better than us, it would be interesting to know if their freight contributes a more significant revenue.
