THE sad headline story in Saturday’s Echo was about a cyclist killed by a motorist on the A351.
Inside there was once again a letter from Philip Whitelegg calling for a ban on cycling on the promenade.
Our roads are becoming death-traps for cyclists. The promenade provides a safe and healthy way to travel between Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch.
As a cyclist I have had many dangerous encounters with motorists. I have also had many dangerous encounters with pedestrians walking out in front of me. My observation is that the vast majority of cyclists who use the promenade are safe and considerate.
There is a tiny minority who are not and who should face serious consequences for bad behaviour.
Perhaps Mr. Whitelegg should cycle from Poole to Christchurch by road and reflect on the headline story before attempting to force a large number of cyclists on to the roads.
