RYANAIR boss Michael O’Leary (surprise, surprise) and Bath Travel’s Peter Bath were very vocal in their condemnation of the CAA’s decision to close some of our airspace in response to the ash cloud resulting from the most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland.
I suspect that both of these gentlemen would be among the very first to pillory the CAA if, as a consequence of having underestimated the threat, an aircraft were to crash as a result of its engines being damaged by volcanic ash.
When it comes to the safety of airline passengers, it is surely far better that the authorities err on the side of caution.
I know that I, for one, would certainly far rather put up with the inconvenience of being delayed (for however long), than have an airline take risks just because it didn’t want a potentially dangerous situation impact upon its revenue.
