WHILE the Daily Echo letter of May 30, “Counting the cost of our cyclists”, raises some issues worthy of debate such as competence tests and reflective clothing etc, the main point in the letter regarding the “impact on the economy” does not give the full picture.
Most road accidents by far, surely, are caused by motorists to other motorists, and include subsequent vehicle clear-up costs, whether there have been casualties or not.
Also cyclists do not contribute to the energy crisis, nor do they require more and more roads to bypass the ever growing problem of traffic congestion, with its detrimental effect on air quality.
Your correspondent admits that cycling provides “healthy exercise”. If we really want to save the NHS money, there are few better ways than by cutting back on our largely sedentary modern lifestyles, and keeping fit by either walking or cycling more.
