IN reply to the letter from Alexander Lewis, (Letters, May 26). I fear that the end of your letter lets your argument down - “Many of those tenants who decided to sell made a substantial profit”. I do not disagree with the sale of council houses to sitting tenants but two rules should have applied to these sale.
The money received from sales should have been used to build more social housing; and the profit made by ex-tenants should be repaid to the local authority.
Neither of these happened due to what was correctly described as a “political stunt” by PJ Littlefield.
Due to this policy, we have now reached a position where there are thousands on waiting lists for housing and nothing available.
