I REFER to Philip Whitelegg’s letter (Echo, May 28) in which he repeats his views regarding cycling on the Promenade.

He says that the Prom was constructed for pedestrians and not pedal traffic.

However the fact is that it is now a wide carriageway with a wide raised pedestrian footpath.

The council have, in any case, long forgotten any ‘pedestrian only’ intention as the Prom between the pier is now used intensively by cars, motorcycles etc and, of course, the ‘noddy train’ and must be a lucrative source of revenue for our council. The main danger to pedestrians, especially children in the busy summer months is, in my opinion, from motor traffic.

Although most car drivers are careful when driving on the Prom there are always a few who blatantly ignore the prevailing speed limit, with consequent risk of accidents.

Most cyclists are responsible and cycle safely and the present arrangement is a great asset to the cycling fraternity who should be able to continue to use the Prom.
