IF I wish to drive from my house to London all l need do is ensure that I pass the first camera on the Wessex Way at no more than 40mph and the second one at no more than 50mph.

I am then free to drive as fast as I like while tailgating, under-taking, weaving from lane to lane and generally acting like an idiot.

I can be blind drunk or pumped full of drugs and my car can have bald tyres, worn suspension and faulty brakes yet I have a very good chance of reaching my destination without being apprehended.

All the cameras know is that I obeyed the speed limit for about 30 metres out of a 100-mile journey so how can they possibly be considered to be a safety device?
