ON Saturday morning we visited the park in Highcliffe. My husband and two children were cycling and I was walking. The British Legion were setting up stalls for their fun day.

As we left, a car drove across the park near to the gate in Wharncliffe Road. The driver manouevred and then pulled forward, the cyclists went ahead, and then the car started to reverse.

The youngest rider (five years old) was slower; the driver had not seen him and an accident only avoided by people around shouting.

The driver stopped the car about two inches from child. No one was hurt and they rode on but as I approached the car the driver said to his friend, “Where’s the little b***** gone now?”

I took offence and pointed out that this was a park with children around and if he had been able to see out of the rear or used his mirror, he might have seen the child.

As I left he was heard to say “p*** off”.

An uncouth youth you may ask? No he was at least late 60s. Maybe he had no grandchildren.

We did not attend the fete later.
