ONCE more, Poole Harbour commissioners have failed to do their figures before creating the new Port of Poole Marina.
Planning permission was given by Poole Council on one pretext that in 2012, pleasure craft visitors will use it in preference to Weymouth Harbour, taking public transport to watch the Olympics.
How gullible are they? Just like Poole Quay Marina, built also primarily for visiting yachtsmen, this mini 60-berth marina will become filled with permanent berths, a much more lucrative business; hence the PHC dream of ruining the harbour with a 980-berth new Hamworthy Marina.
Port of Poole Marina faces southerly gales head on, just as Poole Quay does, and will be too dangerous for yachts to use even temporarily in these conditions, let alone on a permanent basis.
There is no floating breakwater, as originally planned, to give the necessary protection and even in strong westerlies, the motion on the pontoons is unacceptable and they will surely break up.
New larger and heavier pontoons for the outside perimeter will not be the answer, only a permanent breakwater costing millions more is the right solution.
