LAST weekend in London and 140 cities throughout the northern hemisphere, thousands of people cycled naked in the annual World Naked Bike Ride promoting the benefits of cycling and freedom from body shame.

I went to Brighton, where, along with hundreds of others, I cycled naked through the city centre and along the seafront, whilst Sussex Police did their usual brilliant job of facilitating the event, ensuring that both participants and spectators enjoyed the fun of the carnival atmosphere.

And what do I find on my return to Bournemouth? Following complaints from two old ladies, a man has faced the full majesty of the law and a three-day trial, and been convicted of a criminal offence for doing much the same thing here.

The message that goes out to the world is clear. If you’re living in the 21st century and want to enjoy a fun break, head for broadminded Brighton. If you want the misery of Edwardian attitudes and bigots in bathchairs come to Bournemouth.
