REFERENCE “Green Bin” charges. Council tax is prohibitive but remember that as it stands at the moment where there is no separate charge, the person in a flat/apartment, etc, is subsidising the garden rubbish collections.

Ignore £31 charges and compost as much waste as you can, although I will concede that hedging matter is beyond composting.

Normal waste such as lawn/grass clippings, old bedding plants, runner bean tendrils, soft pruning, kitchen peelings, cabbage stumps, crushed egg shells, contents of tea bags, not the paper bag itself, all make perfect compost.

Crushed egg shells do not rot/break down quickly but the calcium content is marvellous for your soil and mixed in with the rotted compost will deter slugs.

Sir Lawrence Oliver and Vivien Leigh had a compost heap.

I know, I was there. Give it a go, not really an invigorating hobby but rewards can be amazing.
