I see that Poole Council are still considering charging for “Green Bin” collection for those that require it, to compensate for those, without gardens, that do not.
I’m all for a fair society but I was under the impression that the council tax, which funds such service, is based upon “rateable value” of a property (garden or not) and is evened-out across the community as an average, regardless of individual social needs?
I agree that not everybody has a garden and, therefore does not require a Green Bin. But by the same argument, not everybody has children (negating the need for mid-wives, maternity care, nurseries, schools), are ill (negating the need for ambulances, nurses, doctors, NHS) or live on public highways (street lights, drainage, maintenance etc.), the list goes on.
If we are able to “opt out” of one service, surely we are able to apply the same criteria to other services?
Luckily I am able to compost the waste from my large garden but others less fortunate may wish to resort to “bagging” up garden waste and disposing it in the weekly black bin collection (as in the past) or, God forbid, resorting to illegal dumping.
What then of the 70-90 per cent Poole recycling target achievement and future council tax bills?
