THE waste debate is focused on allocation of costs for recycling.
May I please suggest we approach this subject from a different angle? An EU directive has set recycling targets to member countries (deadline 2020) to reduce waste going to landfill and the production of greenhouse gases.
This has been reported in the national press. The UK, as a member country of the EU, either increases percentage recycled waste or, if targets are not achieved, we pay fines to the EU.
We recycle more, (and pay for that if necessary) or we are fined by Brussels.
There is a 3rd option. Reduce waste to landfill.
Waste management is not free. Minimalism is key.
