I WAS absolutely appalled to read John Coulston’s thoughts on the Government’s much-awaited response to squatting, making it illegal as it used to be so many years ago.
How would he feel if he had just come out of hospital to find squatters had moved into his home or possibly just come back from a long holiday to find Squatters had moved into his home?
Not only is it the amount of damage that can be caused, but also the fact at the moment without a long drawn out court hearing they are not removable.
Who pays the court cost for removing these people, obviously the houseowner?
Who pays for the courts costs for defending these people, obviously the Legal Aid Fund, mine and your taxes.
I personally think it is one of the best pieces of legislation David Cameron has brought about and I applaud him.
Squatting should be illegal, it is immoral and anti-social.
What John should take into consideration is that if squatting stays as an acceptable way of putting roofs over people’s heads that his Shelter in Grosvenor Gardens could soon run out of clients because a big proportion of the homeless people, which he so successfully looks after, would no doubt prefer the rent free, electric & gas free, life of squatting.
Only by making it legal would he have these people come to him and others like him and help sort out their chaotic lifestyles, bringing them back into the community where they can live a purposeful life.
