FOR the first time in half a lifetime I am very heartened indeed by political leadership in the Houses of Parliament.

Well said David Cameron in the House of Commons: “Democracy is government by explanation”.

I thought that was outstanding – not dogma, not ideology, not force of power, but a world where explanations are given why actions and policies are followed.

And no less well done all three main party leaders and all MPs voicing outrage at phone hacking and taking a common stand against News International taking over the whole of the Sky network.

But two caveats here – I don't think any MPs spoke out quite as forthrightly on the MPs’ expenses scandal, with hundreds of MPs abusing the system to benefit themselves.

And I think we should bear in mind the truth would not have come to light but for the subterfuge of someone in Parliament leaking the data disk to the media.) Hopefully, moves now will see the end of any press baron having such vast influence on which party will take power in Parliament.

Well done all party leaders and MPs standing together and beginning to restore British elected democratic power over commercial interest groups.
