I KNOW that on the face of it, Oliver Letwin was made to look “wacky” by the media exaggerating the facts (‘Is Oliver “bin” Letwin Boris Johnson-lite?’ by Faith Eckersall) because it captures the public imagination and this in turn sells newspapers.

It’s known as good journalism.

As a former Purbeck district councillor, the amount of paper correspondence from promotions, council business and various newsletters was immense.

After reading them, I would frequently send unwanted items for recycling.

I took my responsibilities very seriously and although I had to bin non-relevant literature or faced renting an industrial unit to store it, my electorate’s mail, along with confidential information was for my eyes only, and when an issue was put to bed, that correspondence was shredded.

As a government minister, Oliver’s mail would be considerably more, but I am absolutely certain nothing of a private nature would have been dumped into a public waste bin that was not readily available in the public domain.

Perhaps at this point, I should apologise for spoiling a good scare story.

If Faith feels so aggrieved about Oliver’s education, perhaps she should have a word with his parents about it or question why other party MPs with similar backgrounds evade like-for-like attention? That’s just an observation.
