WE need our political appointees at a national and local level to be accountable to the electorate.
At a national level we have Hansard and websites such as www.theyworkforyou.com.
But at a local level, what do we have? The simple fact is that we have nothing and we need it.
We need to understand how many full council meetings our councillors have attended. If they are on a committee how many of these meetings have they attended? How many times have they spoken or contributed? Seemingly, some councillors will be eligible to claim somewhere in the region of £12,000 for their work in 2011/12.
What do we get for that, how hard do they work for it? Are they worth their salt or not? This is our town and the councillors are our servants and as such they need monitoring.
If democracy is to be saved we need to ensure that those elected beneficiaries of it are held accountable for their stewardship.
