ISN’T it time a cycling campaign was started? Maybe you could convince the drivers that cyclists are not slowing them down.
By not being in cars they are reducing congestion, which gets everyone to their destination faster. If the town was made cycle-friendly, and the bike hire scheme implemented properly, then the nightmarish congestion that we all suffer during the holiday periods would be much improved. And people who actually need to use their cars could do so without waiting hours in traffic jams. We need decent routes to cycle that are off the roads so children and the elderly can ride places without danger.
Rather than stirring up endless bickering about red-light jumping, cycling without lights and pavement cycling, why not try to bring people’s attitudes together for the benefit of everyone? Imagine how much better it would be if all kids over eight cycled to school, as is the case in a lot of places in Holland. So much less traffic on the roads. So much more exercise for our flabby youngsters. And so much time saved for parents.
