I READ your article in the paper (Echo, Wednesday, March 22) regarding the recommended temporary expansion of Hill View School.

The proposal approved by Cabinet is “to convert the area currently occupied by the library into an additional classroom”, not to “see the town’s second largest primary school lose its library.”

This distinction is an important one.

The reason for suggesting the use of the library space is because it is sited next to the existing reception classrooms.

The requirements for circulation around reception classes are different from those in other year groups so schools usually regard siting them together as a very high priority and this priority informed the proposal.

Council officers will work with the school through the head and governors to work up a practical scheme to relocate the library facilities elsewhere on the site, while ensuring the best teaching environment is ensured for all the children.

The same approach will be applied at other schools which are taking additional numbers, with the practical requirements for each site considered individually.
