I HAVE just returned from Strasbourg in France, where 20 years ago I worked for a year.
In the intermediate time the city has built a tram system. It has transformed the place. It’s clean, convenient and safe. Lots of bicycle lanes and hardly any cars.
You could really enjoy the beauty of the city. As in Bournemouth, the station was detached from the centre, so they’ve built an underground link to the main square.
Over 30 years Alderman Trenchard had a vision for a metro system for the conurbation. While I was away I discovered the IMAX is to be demolished.
The free space would make a superb tram hub. I’m sure if Bournemouth and Poole councils set out to copy Strasbourg’s system, it would be viewed favourably.
European money is available for these projects. What is more I discovered that many of the trams were built in Yorkshire.
