ANSWERING Gill Kershaw’s letter to your newspaper on bonfires. Those who are selfish and downright inconsiderate to neighbours can expect a fine of up to £3,000 – yes three thousand pounds.
Legislation is under Section 80 (Smoke Nuisance) of Environmental Protection Act of 1990.
There is also the Clean Air Act and Particle Litter being inhaled.
Gone are the old days when all waste goes to the tip. Smoke going straight up looks safe enugh even from an incinerator – ah but you have absolutely no control over air currents which can cause fires with disastrous results for which you are to blame.
Smoke in any quantity does cause cancer as proven by cigarettes.
So let’s have less of it.
