IN reply to David Thomas of Weymouth, I am the local councillor who nominated an exceptional community worker to be an Olympic Torch bearer.
I, too, am disappointed that Dave Hamilton will be running with the Torch in Weymouth, rather than on his home patch in Bournemouth.
It isn’t at all strange, as David suggests, that I nominated Dave, who is tireless in his efforts for his local community, by engaging youngsters in sports, “enviro-cleaning” unsightly areas, and involving residents in improving their own lives in every way.
I also nominated local resident Brenda Clark for her wonderful work in setting up the Youth Cancer Trust, which gives holidays in Bournemouth for young people with life limiting illness, raising the funds to provide fabulous days out and unforgettable holidays in a safe environment; unfortunately, Brenda got through to the second round but was not chosen by LOCOG to actually carry the torch.
LOCOG’s decision in who runs where seems strange, especially as we have people from Kent running in Bournemouth, but everyone who has been chosen is worthy of the honour and I am sure the day the torch comes to town will be a cause for much celebration.
