I WRITE from memory and possibly readers will want to correct me. During the Labour government, local councils were told to make use of their assets even if it meant selling them off and in some cases, school playing fields etc.
At that time the Liberal Democrats held a majority on the Bournemouth Council and, with support of the Conservatives, the Waterfront building was constructed.
There were no real objections at that time as the Imax was thought to be a crowd pleaser.
Then came the elections and the Tories won back the council. They too have continued to look at opportunities for the town centre.
A small number of people, compared to the population as a whole, of the taxpaying Bournemouth public decided the Imax building should be removed at any cost although it was mainly occupied and producing an income.
That attracted national media coverage and some bright spark called it the ugliest building in the country. Which is total nonsense.
I agree the Imax building was not the best of designs. But it is there, it is not in need of repair. It could provide employment and be a tourist attraction run and owned by the council.
But no, the Tories spend £8.5million to end up with an empty space and no income. Just think how many council houses could have been built for that money on land they own, or a new school.
