WITH reference to the editor’s comments (Opinion, May 10) I would point out that Poole Council's decision to not openly publicise the list of roads selected for having street lights switched off between midnight and 6am was on police advice.

This decision is not based on any potential risk of actual crime.

As some residents’ concerns about the scheme are based on their fear of crime, the council would be acting irresponsibly to then reinforce that concern by publishing all the roads identified. I can assure residents that the selection of roads was made in full consultation with ward councillors, the police and the Safer Neighbourhood teams and based on several safety-related criteria.

Residents directly affected have been individually notified of the scheme and invited to comment.

All were informed that their road would only be selected if there were a clear majority of residents in favour of the trial. Roads where residents have chosen to continue with the scheme can expect the nine-month trial to start in early September.

I am satisfied that the letters gave residents full details of the proposed scheme and am delighted that we have received a very positive response to go ahead with the next stage from almost all the roads selected.
