I'M sorry to disappoint C Cooper (Don’t allow the EU flag to fly at games, May 7) but I am afraid this claim that the EU has ordered member states to fly the EU flag at all sporting events is pure nonsense.
Whilst such a proposal was made in a committee of the European Parliament, there has been no proposal for legislation, which ultimately requires the approval of national governments in the Council of Ministers before again being ratified by the UK’s Houses of Parliament.
Frustratingly, scores of similar stories are produced every year.
Using a thread of truth, one myth after another is produced that only attempts to achieve eurosceptics’ ultimate goal of denigrating the positive work carried out at European level, undermining the entire process.
Would your correspondent not agree that allowing more time for current national issues to be discussed and debated at Westminster, allowing the UK to share and exchange ideas with our European partners and in the process saving the taxpayer money through the pooling of resources is a good thing?
SIR GRAHAM WATSON MEP
