YOUR correspondent James Wills is wrong to assert that tidal power could enable this country to become self-sufficient energy-wise if deployed as an alternative to off-shore wind power (Echo letters 22 May).
The DECC says “Studies have estimated the UK’s total theoretical tidal range resource at between 25 and 30 Gigawatts enough to supply around 12 per cent of current UK electricity demand”.
That would potentially reduce the UK’s carbon footprint by about four per cent.
They plan for 2GW of tidal and wave power on-line by 2020 and 30GW by 2050 alongside 25GW off-shore wind power by 2020.
