I WAS amazed to hear a clear tannoy at Sainsbury’s Alder Hills telling me how fantastically good their cheap whisky deal is and how it is so good that it is limited to six bottles per customer. Apparently this would be a great way to celebrate Father’s Day and also the Jubilee weekend.

At the Silver Jubilee we had street parties where people drank tea, had a dance and a good safe time was had by all ages.

You couldn’t get any alcohol at supermarkets and I don’t seem to remember this ruining the day for anyone.

I have suggested to the local safer neighbourhood team that this store’s licence should include a condition that they don’t tannoy at 10.15am or indeed any time pushing cheap booze of any nature onto people, let alone spirits.

I rang the store’s customer care line and while I was on hold, a message told me all about how Sainsbury’s supports charities, and also a healthy lifestyle for everybody.

This is rendered a nonsense by cheap, heavily-promoted alcohol sales which promote ill health, crime and disorder and family breakdown.
